So the question here is, does RAM really speed up your computer?

When upgrading your computer, there are many things that you can do at differing levels of work, difficulty and expense. The most economical thing to do sometimes is just to buy a complete new computer! That is expensive though. So what are the things that you can do to speed up the performance of your system? Click below to read more to find out….

  • The first thing you can do is defrag your system. This can be done at no extra cost, all it takes is a little time and effort.
  • The second thing you can do is clean up your desktop. Many people don’t realise that anything on their desktop will contribute the the usage of memory, thus leaving less psace for the things you are actually using, and therefore slowing everything down.
  • The third thing you can do is alter the programs that automatically open on the start up of your computer. Many of these applications that you are “using” you are infact not using! They are simply taking up processing power, again reducing the speed of your computer!

These are all things that you can do without touching the hardware. There will come a point however where there is no more you can do on your system, and you just need to make your computer faster in some way. This is where RAM upgrades come in.

Most upgrades that you do require a real knowledge of how things work in order for you to not break your computer in the process of upgrading. Many people take their computers to a shop and pay someone else to do it for them - nothing wrong in this. The beauty about changing your RAM is that it is quick and very simple to do. Anyone with a screwdriver can change their RAM. You just open it up, sitck it in and the job is done. There is nothing to install, nothing to upgrade, no set up required.

So we know it is easy, and you can order it cheeply through the internet. So does it work, does it speed things up? Well the answer is yes and no. It doesn’t actually speed things up. It won’t make your system run faster, you haven’t upgraded the processor. However, it means that many of the “slow downs” that you have been getting will cease to happen. Let me explain.

Say you work for a canvas printing company, and you are the graphics guy. You spend your time maniplulating items and images before they go to the printer to be run off. When you rendering, or you are between large files, you may experience a slow down or some freezing. You may find that you have to wait whilst the computer catches up with you. THIS is what extra RAM will prevent happenning. It is this slow down and freeze out that will be offset by the extra memory that you have just bought in.

So whilst it won’t speed things up, the elimination of the slow down will speed you up! I highly recomend a RAM upgrade as an inexpensive way of improving the performance of your machine.
